Breast MRI Disclaimer

A negative breast MRI has a high negative predictive value for breast carcinoma to a lower threshold of 4-5 mm; regardless, appropriate clinical and mammographic followup are always necessary. MR may miss some less angiogenic tumors; therefore, it should not be used to avoid a biopsy otherwise indicated. For suspicious calcifications or worrisome palpable masses, biopsy is indicated, regardless of these results. Normal appearing lymph nodes may contain tumor. Due to prone positioning for this exam, the location of findings described on MR may differ from other studies.
